Wed, 15 Feb 2012 02:57:41 -0800 A view from the UK: Universities and regional economic development http://edproblog.net/a-view-from-the-uk-universities-and-regional http://edproblog.net/a-view-from-the-uk-universities-and-regional A think tank in the UK has released an interesting report on the role of universities in regional economic development. The report provides a good framework for understanding how universities shape the trajectory of regional economies.

One important economic impact of universities that's missing: the increased earnings of graduates. Our partners at EMSI have captured this impact in their work on measuring economic impacts of universities. EMSI captures the impacts from different perspectives. You can view their approach by exploring their work for the University of Idaho

In an interesting report on focus groups conducted in Ohio and North Carolina, a research team found ways to position clean energy development:

  • Focus on long term economic growth, not short term jobs;
  • Focus on curbing pollution, not climate change;
  • Focus on the role the government can play as facilitator, not direct investor.
Here's the report:

The Mayor of Denver has released a new economic development strategy. The mayor wants the strategy to create a "world class city". There's not much new here, though. It looks a bit more like a laundry list or a catalogue of ideas rather than a strategy. It hardly reads as the "laser focused" strategy that the mayor declares it delivers.

Thu, 26 Jan 2012 17:30:10 -0800 Alabama's economic development strategy documents http://edproblog.net/alabamas-economic-development-strategy-docume http://edproblog.net/alabamas-economic-development-strategy-docume Earlier this week, Alabama's governor released a new statewide strategy, Accelerate Alabama. You can learn more about the strategy from this CBS news report. The project web site, hosted by the consulting firm contracted for the project, is here

On first reading, it's hard to see how tough challenges will be addressed. The recommendations are at a fairly abstract level.  The strategic narrative is focused on a three part theme of recruitment, retention and renewal.

Not much new here.
